LineSight vs UiPath: Should a Service Center Script Its Order Entry or Buy It?

UiPath gives you robots, document extraction and agents to automate any process you script. LineSight is a metals workflow from PO to release. How to choose.

UiPath is the right choice when you want one automation platform across the whole company and have people to build and look after the automations: order entry, AP, reports, anything with a screen. LineSight is the right choice when the job is specifically a metal service center's order desk and the planning behind it, and you want that working without a build project.

The two have more in common than it first appears. A UiPath robot can type an order into your ERP's screens, and so does LineSight. The difference is what decides what gets typed, and what happens after the order exists.

What UiPath does well

UiPath is built on robotic process automation: software robots that work an application's screens the way a person would. Its current plans add agents and document processing on top. Per its pricing page:

  • Community is free.
  • Basic starts at $25 a month, with a two-robot limit and limited agent calls. UiPath says Basic is evolving and an updated plan is coming.
  • Standard is priced through sales, with a 60-day trial. It adds enterprise automations with agents and classification and extraction of data from documents and communications at scale.
  • Enterprise adds self-healing UI automation, process simulation and bring-your-own model options.

The breadth is the real advantage. One platform, one skill set in-house, and the same team can automate invoice entry, month-end reports and order entry. A free tier means you can prove a concept before spending anything.

What a UiPath order-entry build involves

A robot types what it is told. For a metals order desk, the telling is the hard part. Someone has to build the extraction for steel PO lines that carry no part number, the matching of gauge, coating, width and weight to an attribute-coded item master, the handling of cwt pricing and tolerances, the review step where a person approves before the robot submits, and the exception path for everything that does not fit.

Then someone has to keep it running. Screen automations need attention when an ERP's screens change, and UiPath's Enterprise plan includes self-healing UI automation aimed at that. Budget for an owner, not just a build.

How LineSight works differently

LineSight also enters sales orders through the ERP's own screens, with the customer's own codes. What sits in front of that step is a product built for metals. Its Command Center reads orders from email, PDFs, photos, texts and WhatsApp and matches them against live inventory. Each order then goes into a slitting or cut-to-length plan that respects gauge, width, grade, knife setup, PIW, coil weight and lead time.

After entry it keeps going. Work orders go to the floor and outside processors, carrier quotes come back and the release goes out, and short material is flagged and the buy built. The calls that matter land in a Needs you column for a person to approve. LineSight is live with PS Data, INVEX and Enmark and builds a dedicated integration for other ERPs during onboarding; most customers are live in under a month.

Where each approach holds up

The same order format, every day, from your biggest customer

A UiPath robot handles a stable, repeatable input well, and this is a good first automation. LineSight handles it too, but if this is your only problem, a robot may be enough.

A buyer texts a photo of a handwritten order for 14 ga hot rolled pickled and oiled, slit to 7.25 inches

LineSight reads photos and texts as order sources. In UiPath, this is extraction, matching and approval logic your team would design and test.

Three orders on the same gauge that could share a coil

Here the gap is widest. Deciding which coil to open and how to nest the widths is a search across millions of patterns, done by LineSight's optimization engine. UiPath's pricing page lists no planning or optimization; its robots carry out steps someone has defined. See the 65-year-old math problem running your slitting line for why.

Can you use both?

Yes. If UiPath already runs your AP or reporting, keep it there. Let LineSight own customer orders, planning and freight. Avoid having a robot and LineSight both enter the same orders.

The bottom line

UiPath is a broad, proven platform for teams that want to build and own their automations across the business. LineSight is narrower and deeper: a metals order desk and planning desk that come built, and are priced on what they return. Which to choose

Choose LineSight if

  • You want metals-specific order reading and matching without building it.
  • You slit or cut coil and want plans built from the whole order book.
  • You run PS Data, INVEX or Enmark.
  • You want freight and material buys on the same board as the order.

Choose UiPath if

  • You want one automation platform for many departments, not just orders.
  • You have, or will hire, people to build and maintain automations.
  • Your order inputs are stable and repetitive enough for a scripted robot.
  • You want to start free and prove a concept before buying.
  • Your problem ends once the order is in the ERP.
