- Work orders get typed a second time, then emailed to the floor and again to the toll processor.
- Someone calls three carriers, writes three numbers on a pad, picks one, and types the release.
- What inventory did not cover becomes a note to purchasing, which becomes an RFQ, someday.
Every one of those steps is a transcription or a search. The transcription is beneath the person doing it. The search, meaning which orders go on which coils in which sequence, is beyond what any person can do properly, because the feasible combinations run into the millions and a morning allows for dozens.

The six steps a command center runs
The test of a command center, as against a feature, is whether it runs the whole chain. Six steps, in order, on one board:
- Orders found. It watches the channels orders actually arrive on: the ERP, email, texts, PDFs, photos of a marked-up sheet. It starts working the moment one lands. Nobody forwards anything.
- ERP work handled. It enters the sales orders, purchase orders, and outside processing POs into your ERP, in your ERP's own screens, with your customer codes.
- Material matched, slitting plan built. It holds the whole order book against live inventory and searches for the plan that ships the most material at the most profit. What stock cannot cover gets flagged short.
- Work orders issued. Work orders get created in the ERP and sent out, to your slitters and to your outside processors, which are usually the ones that get forgotten.
- Freight quoted and booked. It goes to your carriers, collects the quotes, puts them side by side, books the one you pick, sends the release, and watches the shipment.
- Material bought. What is still open after allocation becomes a buy. It sources it and sends the RFQ, mill list or blind bid, and the replies come back to the same board.

How it differs from the things you already own
It is not an ERP
An ERP is a system of record. It remembers everything and decides nothing, and that is the job description, not a flaw. Ask a metals ERP what is on the floor and it answers to the pound. Ask which coil to open against tomorrow's book and it has no opinion. A command center does not replace the record. It is the layer that decides, and it writes its decisions back.
It is not an ERP add-on
Advanced planning modules have been bolted onto ERPs since the 1990s. They were built for factories with parts, routings, and run times. A slitting floor has none of those as its primary objects. It has patterns, arbor space, edge trim, knife setups, and max-outs. Those arrive in a generic module as configuration and consulting hours, and a custom field is still a record. You end up owning a perfect description of the problem and nothing that solves it.
It is not a standalone optimizer
Cutting-stock solvers are real and good. Point one at a slitting floor and it hands you a pattern. A generic AI assistant that answers questions about your inventory is a search box with better manners. It waits to be asked. A command center is not asked. It watches, and it acts, inside a domain model. A chatbot has no idea that 0.7 of a strip cannot ship, or that two gauges cannot run on the same setup.
The human-in-the-loop model
A command center that decides everything would not survive a week on a real floor, and should not. The working model is a board with three columns: needs you, in progress, done. Things land in needs you when the decision carries judgment or money:
- Approve the slit plan before it goes to the floor.
- Choose the carrier when three quotes are in.
- Accept or reject a mill quote on a buy.
- Decide a header field the PO did not specify.
Everything else runs. The day changes shape: instead of eight hours of transcription and one of judgment, it is an hour of judgment on a queue already staged, with the alternatives visible. The software does the search and the typing. The person keeps the call on which customer can flex a day and which coil to hold back.
What a command center requires
Three things, and the third is the one that eliminates most vendors.
Two-way ERP integration. Reading orders and inventory is table stakes. Writing back is what makes it a command center instead of a dashboard: sales orders, work orders, outside processing POs.
