What you cut, and how, settles most of this choice. Shops whose tons mostly go through a slitter or a cut-to-length line will find INVEX the better-documented fit, since Invera publishes layout functions for slitting, CTL, multi-strand blanking, oscillating and shearing. Shops built on plate, bar, pipe and structural, where the cutting question is how to nest pieces into a plate or a bar, will find that Steel Manager III from 4GL Solutions publishes the tools for it, with integrated linear nesting and a plate nesting link to SigmaNEST.
Both are cloud ERPs built for metal service centers, both makers have roughly four decades or more in the business, and both sell outside the US. Platform is not the deciding factor here; product mix is.
At a glance
What INVEX does well
Invera's flat-rolled page names the equipment a coil processor runs and says INVEX has specialized layout functions for each, recorded on the floor by barcode. It also lists the awkward cases: material received while still in transit from the mill, customer-owned coil, multi-step processing across plants, slit coil for tube production and consignment. Product lines also exist for plate, tube, rolling mills, energy and OCTG, and building products, so a mixed business is covered, but the coil side is where Invera says the most.
Its newest work is AI. Ivy, announced in September 2026, adds agents that update due dates, cancel order items, apply contract pricing, reschedule jobs after downtime and trace damaged tags, each confirmed with the user before it runs. Invera says these arrive incrementally in upcoming releases. Since 2024, saw-cut quotes and orders can also be length-nested in one click to find what Invera calls the optimal cut plan to reduce scrap.
What Steel Manager III does well
4GL describes Steel Manager III as a fully integrated, cloud-based ERP that users reach from any device with an internet connection through Chrome or Edge. Its list of specialties is long on products that are cut rather than slit: general line, pipe and tube, valves and fittings, OCTG, tool steel, bar and plate, perforated and expanded metal, mesh and wire rope, structural and architectural. Flat-rolled products are on the list too.
The cutting tools match that list. Linear nesting is built in, plate nesting runs through an integration with SigmaNEST, remnants are tracked in inventory, and a picture of a plate drop can be attached to the inventory item. An Advanced Production Schedule filters by date and raw material, and handheld scanners track processing time.
Around that sit quoting with price books and profitability checks, Excel import for both quotes and orders, EDI, an eCommerce customer portal, integrated accounting and automatic delivery of mill test reports. 4GL's published testimonials come from shops such as Penn Stainless Products and ASA Alloys, which runs eight locations in Canada.
Where each one stops
Neither publishes a planner that looks across the whole open order book and decides which orders go onto which coils. INVEX's nesting works one saw-cut quote or order at a time; Steel Manager III's nesting fits pieces into a bar or a plate. Both are useful, and both answer a narrower question than the one a slitting planner faces each morning.
We found no mention of AI or automated PO intake on 4GL's pages. Invera's Ivy can create a quote or sales order when a user instructs it, but the launch does not describe reading a customer's emailed PO into a new order.
Three buyers, side by side
A coil processor with two slitters and a blanking line
Start with INVEX. Steel Manager III does list flat-rolled products, but its product page does not describe slitting, so ask 4GL to show a slit job from master coil to tagged children before comparing further.
A plate and bar distributor that burns and saws to order
Steel Manager III is the stronger published fit. The SigmaNEST link, built-in linear nesting and drop pictures on inventory are the tools a plate-and-long-products counter reaches for when it quotes cut pieces.
A general-line house in Canada with a branch in Australia
Both have the reach. 4GL is headquartered in Ontario and lists an Asia-Pacific phone line; Invera has offices in Montreal and Dallas. Product mix should decide it, not geography.
Pricing and ownership
| INVEX | Steel Manager III | |
|---|---|---|
| List price | Not published | Not published |
| Owner | Invera | Jonas Software, part of Constellation Software |
| Hosting | Cloud | Cloud, browser-based |
| Go-live time | Not published | Three to four months to about a year, per Metal Center News |
Jonas also owns Jonas Metals, maker of iMetal, so it is reasonable to ask 4GL how the two products are positioned. The Steel Manager III vs iMetal page covers that pair.
The bottom line
Coil-heavy shops should look hardest at INVEX, plate and long-product shops at Steel Manager III, and a true full-line house should take real orders from both sides of the business to each demo. Where coil slitting is a big share of the work, LineSight is live with INVEX and plans the whole order book on top of it; here is how that works.
