Epicor vs INVEX: A Broad Manufacturing ERP or One Built Only for Metals?

Epicor Kinetic is a broad manufacturing ERP for service centers that also fabricate. INVEX is built only for metals, with detailed coil processing layouts.

A shop that fabricates and assembles nearly as much as it processes, and wants one large vendor for manufacturing, distribution and finance, should have Epicor on the list: Kinetic covers quoting, production planning, procurement and finance in one system, and Prophet 21 covers distribution. A shop that is a service center first, with slitters, cut-to-length lines and tags to keep straight, should look at INVEX, which Invera builds only for metal companies and which publishes processing layouts Epicor's metals pages do not.

This pairing matters most to buyers who also fabricate. The trade is breadth and a large partner network against a product built entirely around metal. Neither publishes a price.

What Epicor does well

Epicor pitches Kinetic to service centers as one system for sales, quoting, production and planning, procurement and finance. Its metals page names heat certs, remnant tracking, MRP and advanced units of measure for dimensional inventory, and its quoting cross-references a customer's part numbers automatically, which helps a shop that receives orders in its customers' language.

Breadth is the point. Prophet 21, Epicor's distribution ERP, lists metal services among its industries, and Epicor also sells to fabricated-metals manufacturers. A business that runs a processing line in one building and a weld shop in the next can keep both on one vendor, with a large partner network for implementation. You can run it in Epicor's cloud or on your own servers.

In May 2025 Epicor made its Prism AI agents available for Kinetic and Prophet 21. The published agents focus on the supplier side: RFQs and purchase orders going out.

What INVEX does well

Invera has served metal companies since 1977 and says its software runs at more than 700 metal sites in over 14 countries. It describes INVEX as an ERP and AI platform designed exclusively for metal service centers, with product lines for flat rolled, plate, tube, rolling mills, energy and OCTG, and building products, and more than 300 configuration options.

On coil it publishes more than Epicor's metals pages do. Its flat-rolled page lists specialized layout functions for slitting, cut-to-length, multi-strand blanking, oscillating and shearing, with barcode recording on the floor. Inventory is coded by the metal's own attributes rather than by part numbers. Length nesting is built into quoting for saw-cut items such as beams and angles, so a whole quote or order can be nested in one click.

Its AI, Ivy, faces the other direction from Epicor's: agents that update due dates, cancel order items, apply contract pricing, reschedule jobs after downtime and trace damaged tags, and that can create a quote or sales order when a user instructs it. Ivy confirms each change with the user before it runs. Invera says the capabilities arrive incrementally in upcoming releases.

The trade-off in practice

Epicor's nesting comes through integrations with nesting software, and we found no dedicated slitting module on its indexed metals pages. Invera says every INVEX screen and field is built for metal products. A horizontal ERP covers metal through configuration, extensions and partners, so the useful test is how much of that your shop would need.

The reverse also holds. If a large share of your revenue is fabricated assemblies with bills of material and routings, a metals-only ERP may need more work to carry that side than Epicor would.

Where each one leads

A service center that slits and blanks, with no fabrication

INVEX is the closer fit. Its processing layouts and attribute-based inventory are the core of what it sells, and Epicor's manufacturing breadth would go largely unused.

A processor that slits coil and roll-forms it into finished parts with welded subassemblies

Closer. Epicor's manufacturing depth handles the assembly side; INVEX describes the coil side more specifically. Ask each to walk one order from master coil to shipped assembly.

A distributor that wants AI on purchasing first

Epicor's published Prism agents work on supplier RFQs and POs. Ivy's published agents work on customer orders and warehouse jobs. Pick the one aimed at the desk with the most rework.

The bottom line

Pick Epicor when fabrication and finance breadth matter more than coil-specific screens, or when you need on-premise. Pick INVEX when the business is processing metal and you want the ERP built around it. Neither publishes a planner that assigns the whole open book to coils. LineSight is live with INVEX, and for other ERPs each customer gets an integration built during onboarding, as this comparison with Epicor explains.

Which to choose

Choose Epicor if

  • A large share of your revenue is fabricated or assembled parts
  • You want manufacturing, distribution and finance from one large vendor
  • You need the option to run on your own servers
  • Your customers send orders using their own part numbers
  • You want AI on the purchasing side first

Choose INVEX if

  • You are a service center first, with slitters, CTL lines or blanking
  • You want processing layouts for each flat-rolled operation inside the ERP
  • You quote saw-cut beams or angles and want one-click length nesting
  • You want AI agents that adjust customer orders and reschedule jobs after a person confirms
