How is LineSight different from ERP add-ons or generic AI tools?

LineSight is purpose-built for metal slitting. That sounds like marketing language, so here is what it means in practice.

Against ERP add-ons

Your ERP is a system of record. It is very good at that. It knows what you have, what you sold, what you ran, and what it cost.

What it was never designed to do is decide what should run next. Planning modules bolted onto an ERP are usually scheduling tools: they help you sequence work that has already been decided. They do not solve the cutting problem, because solving it requires a combinatorial optimization engine and that is a different kind of software than an ERP is built to contain.

So an ERP add-on will tell you the plan you entered. It will not tell you the plan you should have entered.

Against generic AI and optimization tools

There are general-purpose optimization platforms and general manufacturing AI tools. Some are technically strong.

The gap is domain. A slitting plan is governed by constraints that only exist in metals: knife setup limits, gauge and grade compatibility, ID and OD, multiple passes, edge conditioning, PIWs, coil genealogy, how drop cuts get handled, what becomes restock and what becomes scrap.

A generic tool can be taught some of this, at length, by you. That teaching is a project measured in months and it never quite finishes, because the constraints that matter most are the ones nobody wrote down.

LineSight arrives already knowing what a drop cut is.

Against pattern-based slitting tools

Some tools in this space generate cutting patterns. They solve a narrower version of the problem: given these widths, arrange them on this coil.

That is useful and it is not the whole problem. The harder question is which orders should go on which coil in the first place, across your entire book, accounting for due dates, inventory position, line availability, and what actually ships versus what sits.

LineSight works order-to-release rather than pattern-only. The plan that comes out is a runnable work order, not an arrangement you then have to fit into a schedule.

The practical difference

Three things separate these categories:

Does it decide, or does it report? LineSight produces the plan. Most alternatives describe or sequence plans you produced.

Does it know metals? The domain model is the difference between software that works in week one and software you spend a year teaching.

Is it configured to your floor? Every LineSight implementation includes configuration around your specific lines, constraints, and preferences. That is not an add-on service, it is how the product works.

Who built it

LineSight's COO ran a metal service center slitting operation for five years before we built this. The CTO founded the largest slitting optimization company in Europe. The product comes from people who have stood on the floor and people who have solved this class of problem at scale, which is a less common combination than it should be.

What it does not do

LineSight does not replace your ERP and does not try to. The two work together: your ERP holds the record, LineSight makes the decision, the decision goes back into your ERP.
