PSImetals vs DELMIA Quintiq: Which Metals Platform Fits a Producer That Also Processes Coil?

PSImetals runs planning, execution, quality and logistics for steel plants. DELMIA Quintiq is a planning and optimization platform modeled to your business.

Pick PSImetals if you want planning and execution from one metals-specific vendor: order dressing, line scheduling, quality, yard logistics and the MES layer all on one platform. Pick DELMIA Quintiq if planning is the hard part, you want a model of your own business that spans sales and operations planning down to rolling mill sequencing, and you are comfortable with Dassault Systèmes' wider DELMIA ecosystem for execution.

Both are aimed at steel and non-ferrous producers, which is why they are often weighed against each other. A typical service center will not find itself in either vendor's marketing. Where they matter to a coil processor is at the edges: a mill-owned processing plant, a cold mill with slitters behind it, or a large flat-rolled group that runs finishing lines as well as a melt shop.

What PSImetals does well

PSImetals is a production management suite in the full sense. PSI describes it as combining supply chain management, advanced planning and scheduling, and a manufacturing execution system, including order dressing and quality control, on one service platform. The modules run from planning through production, quality and logistics, with yard and transport handling for slabs, plates and coils, and newer work on energy and decarbonization.

The customer list reads like a roll call of flat-rolled producers: SSAB, ArcelorMittal, Usiminas, Dillinger France, thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel, Tata Steel Nederland and SSAB Mobile in the US. The most relevant reference for a coil processor is VAMA, the automotive steel joint venture between Hunan Steel Group and ArcelorMittal in China. Its December 2022 go-live covered surface treatment, cold rolling and the service center, with order scheduling, line scheduling, quality execution and a new galvanizing line plus recoiling and packaging lines.

PSI has also published specific AI work. At Hannover Messe 2026 it showed a cloud-enabled, service-oriented release focused on generative AI, with a Model Context Protocol interface to the PSI Factory Model and a chatbot that combines production data with system documentation.

What DELMIA Quintiq does well

Quintiq was founded in 1997 in the Netherlands, and its founders' first scheduling application was built for an aluminum manufacturer. Dassault Systèmes agreed to buy it in 2014. The metals pitch today covers work order planning and rolling mill sequencing up through sales and operations planning and what Dassault calls financial-first planning, all on a live model of orders, capacity, inventory and logistics that it calls a supply chain virtual twin. It can also put a carbon cost on scheduling choices.

The strength is configurability. Quintiq is a planning platform that gets modeled to a specific operation, which suits producers whose constraints do not fit a standard package. Dassault claims average results of 20% less inventory, 75% fewer late orders and less manual planning effort, and 20% lower overall cost, without publishing the baselines. Its published metals case studies include two aluminum producers in Greece: Elval in rolling and Symetal in foil.

Where each stops short for a coil processor

PSI's metals page speaks to steel plants and does not mention service centers. VAMA shows the platform can carry service-center processes inside a mill, but we found no independent service center running it. It is also a multi-module MES and APS implementation, and PSI publishes no time-to-value figures.

For DELMIA Quintiq, the only service-center reference we found is a 2008 trade article listing scheduling tools for hot mill, cold mill, tube mill, bar mill and service-center applications. The current metals page names no customers and does not describe a slitting or cut-to-length optimizer out of the box. As a platform, what it does on your slitter depends on what gets modeled during the project.

How they handle four producer problems

Sequencing a cold mill and the lines behind it

Both cover this. PSImetals does it inside a platform that also tracks what happened on the line. DELMIA Quintiq does it as an optimization model that hands execution to Apriso or your existing MES.

Turning customer orders into coil-level work

PSImetals publishes order dressing as part of its quality module, which is the step that translates a customer's spec into production requirements. Quintiq frames the same territory as work order planning. Ask each vendor to demonstrate a 16 gauge galvanized order travelling from order entry to a slit coil, with your knife and PIW rules in the room.

A planning question from the finance side

Quintiq's financial-first planning and S&OP scope are its clearest edge when the question is which orders to take at what margin across several plants. PSImetals covers sales and operations planning too, as at VAMA, but leads with production.

Putting AI in front of planners

PSI's 2026 metals release puts generative AI up front, with the MCP interface and a chatbot over production data and documentation, and its metals page names AI and machine learning as technologies the platform is built to take in. Dassault's metals page talks about its optimization engine and what it calls integrated intelligence, and makes no explicit AI claims.

Both are enterprise purchases with a scoped implementation. Budget for the project as much as the license.

Can a producer run both?

Sometimes, though rarely by design. A group could run DELMIA Quintiq for network and S&OP planning and PSImetals as the plant-level production system, with clear lines between them. Most producers pick one to avoid two planning models of the same mill.

The bottom line

PSImetals fits a producer that wants one metals-specific system from plan to shipped coil. DELMIA Quintiq fits a producer whose planning problem is unusual enough to justify building a model of it, and which values the wider Dassault toolset. An independent service center whose main question is how to cut tomorrow's coils with the least trim is a different buyer; we cover that case in LineSight vs PSImetals and LineSight vs DELMIA Quintiq.

Which to choose

Choose PSImetals if

  • You want planning, MES, quality and logistics from one metals vendor
  • Your references need to be flat-rolled steel producers
  • Order dressing and quality execution are part of the problem
  • You want a vendor that has already shown generative AI and an MCP interface for metals

Choose DELMIA Quintiq if

  • Planning is the hard problem and your constraints do not fit a standard package
  • You need S&OP and margin-led planning across several plants
  • You already use Dassault Systèmes or DELMIA Apriso
  • Your operation is aluminum rolling or foil, where two of its published case studies sit
