CoilTrim vs SAP PP/DS: Should an SAP-Run Metals Group Plan Coil Trim Inside SAP or Beside It?

SAP PP/DS schedules and campaigns inside S/4HANA but relies on a partner add-on for trim. CoilTrim is a standalone coil-cutting optimizer that feeds the ERP.

If your group runs SAP S/4HANA and your IT team wants planning inside it, SAP PP/DS gives you detailed scheduling and mill-style campaign planning in the ERP, and the trim decision comes from a certified partner add-on plugged into its trim optimizer interface. If your problem is specifically how to cut metal coils into strips with the least waste and the fewest knife changes, Tieto's CoilTrim is a dedicated coil optimizer that sits beside the ERP and hands back plans.

These two are not the same kind of product, which is why the comparison is useful. PP/DS is a planning and scheduling layer of the ERP; CoilTrim is a cutting optimizer. The buyer is usually a metals group already on SAP, deciding whether slitting and cut-to-length planning should be one more SAP project or a specialist tool connected to SAP.

What SAP PP/DS does well

PP/DS is where SAP S/4HANA does finite scheduling. Its optimizer scores a schedule as a weighted sum of times and costs, so a planner can trade setup time against lateness by changing weights. For mill industries such as metal and paper, SAP's planning has carried campaign planning, block planning, multiple output planning and a trim optimizer interface; SAPinsider described these as extensions to APO, PP/DS's predecessor, and noted that creating production campaigns is common practice in steel. That fits how a galvanizing or pickling line groups work. Confirm with SAP which of them your S/4HANA release includes.

The biggest strength is location. Orders, inventory, routings and the resulting production orders all live in the same system, so nothing has to be passed across an interface and reconciled. For a large group with a central SAP team, that matters.

What CoilTrim does well

CoilTrim does one job: cut metal coils into smaller strips with the least width-wise and length-wise waste, while also weighing profit, knife changes and setups. It typically presents five candidate solutions that the planner can compare and adjust. Advanced functions account for coil defects and make-to-stock side runs, and an optional module finds the best coil size to order within a range.

Tieto says it has more than 50 implementations in several countries and that customers typically save more than 1% of input material. It has interfaces for incoming orders and coils, outgoing solutions and some metals-specific systems, and works with ERP and planning systems. Excel can be used for short trials. The interface comes in six languages.

Where each stops short

SAP has relied on partners for trim. An SAPinsider piece from the APO era stated that APO did not have a trim optimizer of its own, and SAP's current learning material points to T.CON's TRIM SUITE for cutting parent rolls. T.CON describes TRIM SUITE as the ideal solution for reel or sheet processing companies and says it supports trim sheet orders in PP/DS; version 4.0 is certified for RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition. We found no published steel-slitting case for it, and its public framing leans toward paper and other reel industries.

We found no named CoilTrim customers or case studies. It runs on Windows, outside SAP, so plans have to cross an interface both ways. We found no mention of a certified SAP integration, and the product page does not mention PIW or coil-weight limits; ask rather than assume either way.

Three planning problems in an SAP-run metals group

A week of galvanized orders grouped into a campaign

This is PP/DS. Campaign and block planning group orders by coating, gauge or grade, and the detailed scheduler sequences them on the line. CoilTrim does not describe campaign planning.

Deciding which strip widths come off which coil

This is the trim decision. CoilTrim does it natively and offers several plans. PP/DS does it through the trim optimizer interface and whichever add-on sits behind it, so the quality of the answer depends on that add-on and how it handles metal rules such as knife counts and strip weights.

A coil with a defect in the middle third

CoilTrim publishes defect handling. For a PP/DS setup, ask the trim add-on vendor to show it with your defect codes.

Can you use both?

Possibly. PP/DS's trim optimizer interface exists so a third-party optimizer can supply cutting plans, and CoilTrim is built to exchange orders, coils and solutions with ERP and planning systems. Whether CoilTrim plugs into that specific interface is not published, so make it the first question for Tieto. The pattern would be PP/DS for campaigns and line sequencing, and a coil optimizer for what gets cut from which coil.

The bottom line

Keep planning inside SAP with PP/DS if campaigns and scheduling are the main problem and your trim needs are covered by a certified add-on. Bring in CoilTrim, or another dedicated coil optimizer, if the scrap in the knife pattern is where the money is. We also compare CoilTrim with our own planner in LineSight vs CoilTrim.

Which to choose

Choose CoilTrim if

  • The cutting decision on the slitter is where your scrap and setups come from
  • You carry coils with defects that need planning around
  • Your planners want several candidate plans to choose between
  • You want a specialist coil optimizer connected to, not built into, the ERP

Choose SAP PP/DS if

  • You run SAP S/4HANA and want planning inside it
  • Campaign and block planning on coating or pickling lines are the main problem
  • Your SAP team will own the project and the trim add-on integration
  • Your cutting is closer to reel or sheet trim, where TRIM SUITE is framed
